Our research seeks to understand how biodiversity and ecosystem functions are maintained across space and time. We focus on species interactions and ecosystem processes within ecosystems, as well as the movement of organisms and materials between ecosystems—for example, animal migrations or flows of detritus. We seek to understand how these dynamics influence species persistence and coexistence, the stability and structure of food webs, and ecosystem functioning. To address these questions, we use a variety of approaches, including field studies, large-scale data analyses, and mathematical modelling. We are located on the St. George Campus of the University of Toronto.
